Everyday exercise is a must at least for 30 minutes, ideally for an hour. This body was not designed for sedentary life style but for doing lot of physical work. As we are becoming more advanced technologically we are sitting down a lot and not moving a body which causes many health issues. Obesity, Diabetes and many more.

The key to Ayurvedic health is balance Ayurvedically choose your exercise according to your Prakriti (Dosha). If you know your body Constitution is predominantly kapha – (which is heavy built), Strenuous activity like playing tennis or jogging, aerobics or doing zumba dancing is ideal for you. Kaphas have to move the body. Because of the heaviness, they tend to be bit lazy. For them it is good to have a buddy to keep them on a regular routine.

Pittas can swim, do morning or moon light walks, jogs or play golf. They should not get into competitive sports as they put lot of stress and tension on the body and muscles. They should exercise for fun and action not for competition. Another thing they have to remember is not to exercise in the hot weather. Swimming cools body down reducing Pitta. Having tee time early in the morning for golf is better so the weather is cool. The trees, grass on the golf course cool people down.

Vatas are the most active people throughout the day, always on the go. Their mind also is on the go. So calming exercise such as Yoga, Q-gong, Tai-chi, meditation, Pranayama are ideal for the busy bees.

Why exercise is important?

  • Increases internal heat, opens up channels, and removes blockages.
  • Strengthens body and increases stamina.
  • The body becomes lighter.
  • Builds and tones muscles & increases endurance.
  • Improves digestion.
  • Helps remove wastes.
  • Reduces fat, fatigue and lethargy.

Exercise is to be done in moderation, until the person:

  • Starts sweating on forehead and under armpits.
  • Feels tired.
  • Starts becoming breathless.
  • Gets dry mouth

Things to avoid:

  • Do not over exert yourself.
  • Do not lift weights beyond your capacity.
  • Do not do stunts which may harm the body.
  • These things deplete Dhatus, muscles become fatigued, and can make you feel dizzy and excessively hot.
  • Do not drink ice cold water right after exercising. E.g. what if you sprinkle cold water on a hot glass? It shatters, same way if you cool down the hot body quickly,  muscles become weak.
  • Never exercise just before lunch time or right after eating lunch. If you exercise, exercise before or right after.

There is a right time for everything and Ayurveda is about doing the right thing at the right time.

There are weekend warriors doing exercise on a weekend, example they walk for 2 and half hours on a weekend, because doctors say that we need to exercise at least 30 minutes every day. This is like eating only on one day of the week and fasting the rest of the week. It is extremely hard on the body, this doesn’t work that way.

Exceptions for exercise – make sure to get medical clearance and clear instructions from a professional as to what you can and can not do:

  • Weak People
  • Sick People
  • People with Bleeding disorders
  • People with Asthma, or chronic cough and or breathing problems.

Healthy tip:

Walking is the best exercise (King of exercises) – It increases longevity, sharpens sense organs and intellect and improves digestion.
